UPSC Mains: Answer Structure

Mains Answer Structure

A good UPSC Mains answer should directly address the demand of the question, remain logically organised and support arguments with relevant examples.

Basic Structure

  1. Introduction: Define the issue, give context or use a relevant fact.
  2. Body: Address every part of the question using clear headings or dimensions.
  3. Conclusion: End with a balanced, practical and forward-looking statement.

Building the Body

  • Use multiple dimensions: social, economic, political, environmental, technological and ethical where relevant.
  • Use examples, government initiatives, committees, constitutional provisions or data when appropriate.
  • Prefer short paragraphs, bullets, headings and simple diagrams where useful.

Question Demand

Before writing, identify the directive: discuss, examine, analyse, critically evaluate, explain or suggest. The directive determines the depth and balance required.

Practice

Practise concise answers within the prescribed word limit and avoid repeating points.
