Previous Year Questions: The Most Useful Way to Analyse Them

· admin

Previous-year questions are more useful when they are analysed rather than merely solved. They reveal recurring concepts, wording patterns, difficulty distribution and the type of thinking required by an examination.

Step 1: Tag every question

For each question, record exam, year, subject, topic, sub-topic and difficulty. Over time this becomes your personal exam map.

Step 2: Separate knowledge from technique

Ask whether you missed the question because you did not know the concept, could not apply it, made a calculation error, misunderstood the wording or ran out of time. Each cause requires a different remedy.

Step 3: Create a frequency list

Count recurring topics. High-frequency areas deserve regular revision, while low-frequency areas should still be covered according to the official syllabus and your exam’s requirements.

Step 4: Redo questions after a gap

Keep selected questions for spaced revision. If you remember the answer but cannot reproduce the method, you have not fully mastered the concept.

Step 5: Convert findings into a plan

Your final output should not be a large PDF of solved questions. It should be a compact list of recurring topics, mistakes, formulas, facts and question types that need further work.
